Let’s Talk Super’s Contract

I’m new to the Board. One of the first things that I learned when joining the Board mid-term last year (filling a vacancy spot) is Board members are not legally allowed to speak about the Superintendent or any district employee in public - it must be done in a closed “Riced” session. In N.J. , there is a RICE Notice / Law which limits on what Board of Education members can say in public about personnel matters, especially around evaluations. As such, Board members are not able to make any evaluative statements about any school employees publicly as this violates the employee’s privacy rights and exposes the district to legal liability.

So, while some may feel the Board is quiet and does not speak up, that’s actually the Board doing the right thing - and avoiding any liability. Only the Board as a whole can only act through formal evaluations, in the proper confidential setting.

The Superintendent’s contract IS, however, public information and here are the highlights:

  • Base Annual Salary Amount - $257,403

  • Initial Contract

    • Appointed: July 1, 2019

    • Term: July 1, 2019 – June 30, 2024

    • Starting Salary: $192,000

  • Renewal / New Contract

    • Approved: June 27, 2022 (Board rescinded the old contract and approved a new one)

    • Term: July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2027

    • Base Salary: $213,000 in 2022–23

  • Salary by school year:

    • 2019–20: $174,689

    • 2020–21: $174,689.

    • 2021–22: $204,893.

    • 2022–23: $208,991

    • 2023–24: $245,000

    • 2024–25: $251,125

    • 2025–26: $257,403

  • End Date of Contract 06/30/27 

  • Contracted Number of Annual Work Days : 260 

  • Contracted Number of Annual Vacation Days: 24 

  • Contracted Number of Annual Sick Days: 12 

  • Contracted Number of Annual Personal Days: 6 

  • Contracted Number of Annual Consulting Days: 0 

  • Number of Other Contracted Non-Working Days: 29
